HASTINGS GOT CULTURE - Part of Hastings Week and Black History Season - was held on 18th October 2008 at St Mary in the Castle, Hastings.
Young people of all races and cultures gathered at St Mary in the Castle to share their creativity through dance and song in this first Hastings Youth and Diversity Celebration.
Deputy Mayor, Peter Armstrong, Owen Thomson of Hastings Intercultural Organisation and Peter Suret of Hastings College all offered their whole-hearted support to these efforts to bring young people into positive engagement through expressing their personal talents and cultural diversity.
During the course of the afternoon and evening some two hundred and fifty young people and their families performed or came to support the event.

Students from Hastings College presented their first original dance piece called Liberdade, which fuses contemporary dance with elements of a Brazilian martial-art form created by slaves brought to Brazil from Africa in the 16th Century. The mix of body percussion, dramatic face make-up and original choreography was very exciting.
Anyme did an outstanding perfomance that left us wanting more.
We were privileged to see Nepali and Malayalee performers and young dancers with songs from Mayotte in the Indian Ocean. Then the WAIT Teams message of respect and valuing myself expressed through break dance and choreographed songs. Gizmo World Delighted with their smiling faces and lyrics, Pestalozzi Village did a display and then the Nepalise and Mayalelee Indian Dancers.
Respond Academy performers added to the rich variety with Breakdancing, Iranian dancers from the under 12s then Introducing Farida Mohammed her own style of Indian dancing ending with LauRen singing a selection of her own Songs leading to the Bonfire break..
After the Bonfire and Fireworks Tim Miller, of Hastings Interfaith Forum, shared some wise words from the great religious traditions expressing that living for others is the fundamental principle for building peace between people, races and religions and Oli Fawcett, of Hastings Youth Council spoke of the Councils exciting plans and the importance of developing positive relationships between young people of different ethnicity and religious background in our town.
The very successful event ended with Anyme then RESPOND ACADEMY performers Original songs from Amie and Joel of Nyeve and the Drum and Bass Crew led By Dj Motive, McLoxie, McSk-man, Mc Lil Lively.
What an amazing and encouraging spread of talent!

A Big Thank You to the young people of Hastings and the St Mary in The Castle team.
Ross, a student at Hastings College was given the opportunity to gain work experience on a structured placement with Nuttall Hynes. The international civil engineering company were carrying out work in the Central St Leonards area and are now offering Ross sponsorship on a degree level construction course.
St Leonards based construction company, George Stone Ltd, have once again been awarded the Investors in People status.
The IiP standard is used by organisations to help determine how best to develop their staffs potential to achieve both the companys business objectives and increased job satisfaction. One quote from the report read, The Company has an unusually high retention of staff and this largely stems from the family firm atmosphere. People described the support they have received during difficult times and explained that they dont believe any other Company would have done the same. This generates mutual loyalty and trust.

Contractors working on the 'Gap' site in Hastings have employed three skilled workers on this important development
